Mufti + Cake for Bushfire Appeal proves popular

On Wednesday 19 February, Chevalier College held a fundraising ‘Mufti + Cake’ event in support of the regional Bushfire Appeal, raising $2,499.

Initiated and organised by the Social Justice Committee at the college, the students were eager to get involved and play a practical role in supporting our local community. For a gold coin donation students could wear ‘mufti’ (non-uniform) clothing, bring cake stall items to sell and/or bring money to spend at the cake stall. Live music played by some of the school’s talented students and the very busy cake stalls created a lively and festive atmosphere during both break periods.

Chevalier College has not held a mufti day in living memory (if ever) so it was a big deal when the Social Justice students pitched their idea for a bushfire appeal fundraiser.

“I couldn’t have been more pleased with our students” said Principal Chris McDermott, “and the way they worked together and responded to this heart-centred school event. When Jules Chevalier said – ‘it is by the heart we are something’, I don’t think he would have imagined that a group of young people would initiate and then action a plan to assist those who have suffered, lost and/or sacrificed.”

A student leaders social event will be held in March at the school with further opportunities to raise funds for the appeal, and the Social Justice Coordinator at Chev, Leonie Stone, said the money raised from both events will go towards supporting members of our local community affected by the bushfires, local rural bushfire brigades, and wildlife care and restoration.
