Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award supports young people aged 14–24 to explore their potential and develop confidence, resilience and purpose.

The Award is voluntary, non-competitive and encourages students to set and achieve personal goals aligned to their interests and aspirations.

YouthAdvance partners with Chevalier College to deliver the Award to students in Years 9 to 12.

Benefits of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

Participation in the Award provides students with opportunities to develop life skills including confidence, resilience, teamwork and problem solving. The Award is highly regarded and may contribute to university pre-admission pathways, ATAR points at some institutions and future employment opportunities.

Students are encouraged to engage with their local community, remain physically active and develop new skills, while building leadership capability and a strong sense of personal responsibility.

Award structure

Bronze level: Minimum duration: 6 months (7 months average)
Silver level: Minimum duration: 6 months after completing Bronze or 12 months via direct entry

Each level includes the following components:

  • Physical: recreationally sport or activity that increases physical exertion
  • Skill: a hobby or activity that does not involve physical exertion
  • Service: community engagement through school, family, religious or sporting groups
  • Adventurous journey (camp): organised by YouthAdvance in partnership with the College, subject to numbers

Pricing is available via the YouthAdvance website. Students are encouraged to register as early as possible, particularly if they wish to accrue hours during the summer holidays.

Please ensure registration is completed by the start of Term 1 so group commencement meetings can begin early in the term.

Cadets

The Australian Army Cadets (AAC) is a community-based youth development organisation focused on Australian Army customs, traditions and values.

Cadets are given the opportunity to challenge themselves, work towards goals as part of a team, and build strong friendships.

Skills developed through cadets

As a cadet, students develop:

  • Leadership, teamwork and survival skills
  • Clear communication skills across formal and informal settings
  • The ability to plan, lead and motivate others to achieve objectives
  • Resilience and perseverance when facing challenges
  • Team participation skills, including following instructions and supporting others
  • An understanding of diversity and the ability to work with different strengths
  • Personal confidence to apply skills in a range of situations and settings

Eligibility criteria

To join Army Cadets, students must:

  • Be at least 12 years of age and turning 13 in the calendar year of enrolment
  • Enrol before their 17th birthday
  • Be able to participate in activities to the best of their ability
  • Be available to attend the majority of scheduled activities
  • Agree to abide by the AAC Code of Conduct
  • Complete an application form signed by a parent or guardian, along with any required supporting documentation
  • Have their application accepted by the Army Cadet Unit Officer in Command

Training

Cadets train at Chevalier College on the Parade Ground:

Wednesdays, 4:15pm – 7:30pm
Assemble at the cadet office in the A Block tunnel

Supervision begins at 3:25pm
Students are welcome to attend parade nights before enrolling.

Fees

  • One-off administration fee: $100 (covers uniform and equipment)
  • Ongoing fee: $60 per term, covering food and transport
    (includes one weekend activity per term and a week-long Annual Field Exercise)
