Joseph Hourn wins Ramsay Scholarship to study at UOW

Congratulations go to Joseph Hourn — Chevalier College Class of 2020 — who has won the prestigious Ramsay Scholarship to study a Bachelor of Arts in Western Civilisation at the University of Wollongong.

Joseph was successful in a competitive field to secure the 5 year scholarship valued at $30,000, including international study opportunities.

Currently preparing for the HSC exams, Joseph said that his study in the History Extension course at school sparked his interest to go deeper and apply for the scholarship; and the fact that he enjoys reading is a definite bonus.

“The Bachelor of Arts in Western Civilisation will allow me to fully understand Western culture as it exists today”, said Joseph. “It excites me that I will be studying great works from Plato to Shakespeare to Immanuel Kant. Additionally, the course is quite small and will allow for intellectual discussions of ideas with like-minded people” he said.

In time, and post-Covid travel restrictions, Joseph would love to study at Cambridge or Oxford University in England.

Asked what his ultimate career role or direction would be after study, Joseph didn’t hesitate, saying, “I am passionate about history and so I would like a career in that field of study, especially one that would allow me to travel overseas to historical sites and locations,”

What a fantastic goal and a wonderful achievement for a hard working student.

Congratulations Joseph from all at Chev!
