ISA Summer Sports – Round 9

Cricket

Saturday’s ISA cricket match against Oakhill College was a day for the purists. 92 overs of competitive cricket over a period of 8 hours in what can only be described as extreme and at times oppressive conditions. Nonetheless, our Chev boys were buoyant at the prospect of being back at home on the Main Oval and, for our Year 12 contingent (Kurtis, Moses, Finn and Sam), this would be their last match at home representing the College.

After being bowled out for 50 in the Round 3 match against the same opposition, the Oakhill captain had no hesitation in sending us in to bat first on Saturday. However, what followed was a determined team batting performance, with no notable individual milestones, but rather a series of selfless partnerships and a quality team total. Kurtis A batted well at the top of the order to see off the new ball before Finn K (38) and Hugh W (38) batted with skill and aggression to set up a great platform to accelerate in the last 10 overs. Enter Sam M (31) and George L (38 not out), both of whom really took the bowling on to put the finishing touches on a competitive first innings score of 217.

In reply, Oakhill started promisingly and were keeping up with the required run rate before Sam M (3/27) made the initial breakthroughs before brother Henry (2/17) and Kurtis A (2/14) ripped through the middle order. At 6/73 an early finished look possible, but full credit to the Oakhill lower order who hung around and took the game deep into Saturday evening. At 9/156, the weather intervened and the furnace was replaced with an almost biblical downpour.

Unfortunately, the boys didn’t get a chance to take the 10th wicket but Messrs Duckworth and Lewis were happy to award the victory to Chevalier after a challenging day in the field. An incredibly satisfying victory and a great way to send out our Year 12 boys who have represented the College proudly over a number of years.
