Show Time with the Chev Show Team
It was a busy start to the year for the Chev Show Team. We exhibited cattle – the breed known as ‘Square Meaters’ kindly on loan to us from Weethalle Stud in Camden – at the agricultural shows in Kangaroo Valley, Moss Vale, Robertson and Camden. And during the April school holidays, students in our Year 11 and Year 12 Primary Industries classes exhibited sheep and took some steers to the ‘Hoof and Hook’ competition at the Hawkesbury Show.
Over the show season Chev’s Show Team had successes in the cattle classes and junior paraders; winning ‘supreme champion’ and ‘champion ewe’ for two of the ewes and we also had success in the handler’s classes.
Whilst at the Camden Show four of our students entered the “young farmers” challenge and came second! This was a huge achievement after being up early, showing the cattle all day in the heat and then competing in this event. St Gregory’s only beat us by 10 seconds!
This year, for the first time, we competed in the Schools Alpaca Competition at Sydney Royal Easter Show. The students were sponsored with animals from Story Book Alpacas in Bargo. This event involved the students taking their alpacas through a course and answering questions about the alpaca industry. We were up against other schools that had been competing with alpacas during the Royal and at other shows. But that didn’t deter our show team and we came third!!
We are so proud of the show team students who have all improved their skills and built their confidence. They get up early, wash in the cold, spend a long day looking after their animals and return home late. We congratulate each one of them for representing their College so proudly.
