Royal Commission Final Report

On 15 December 2017, the Royal Commission presents a Final Report covering its investigations to the Governor-General. The Final Report will make recommendations that aim to support and inform Australian governments, institutions and the general public in preventing and responding to child sexual abuse in institutional contexts. The Provincial of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart (MSC), the society that owns and conducts Chevalier College, has written to all in the MSC family regarding this report.

Although I am on leave at the moment, as Principal of Chevalier College I would like to make the following statement to our community:

The delivery of the findings of the commission will hopefully mark the end of a time where child-safety principles were not given priority and resources by leaders across many institutions.  On behalf of the Chevalier College community, I restate our ongoing commitment to do all we can to protect the children in our care from harm.  The Missionaries of the Sacred Heart require us to not only meet all regulatory requirements, but to also adhere to their comprehensive policies on safeguarding children and vulnerable adults. The college policies and processes for child protection are rigorous and meet all state and federal regulations.

It was heart-warming to read that the Royal Commission Chair, The Hon Justice Peter McClellan AM, acknowledged the important role Catholic schools play in providing safe learning environments and commended Catholic Education for its commitment to child safety.

As you read this article and the letter from the Provincial, if concerns of any nature are raised or the content causes you distress, please contact the college, the organisations listed below and/or the police:

With blessings for the coming festive season
