Moss Vale Show success

Moss Vale Show success

Chevalier College was well represented at the Moss Vale Show held over the weekend of March 16 and 17.

A large Show Team took to the ring for what would be their last local show for the steers before the big one at Sydney’s Royal Easter Show, with teachers Peggy Handley and Show Team coordinator Hayley Mahoney who was thrilled with the students’ performance.

“Overall it’s the best the team and cattle have performed. We won Reserve Junior Champion Heifer, Reserve Champion and Champion Senior Cow and went on to win Supreme Exhibit for our section.

This is a huge achievement, given these animals have calves on them and with the difficult drought conditions, to keep them in ‘show’ condition has taken a lot of work.

It has been lovely to hear comments from other exhibitors and ring stewards about how great they look and that we have done an amazing job with them.”

In the interbreed class (the supreme from each section) Hayley’s quip to a steward “it’s hard to beat an Angus” and she replied “yep, but yours look just as good and deserve to be out there, the Angus isn’t outshining your animal”.

In the steers, Lily Holmes and her steer ‘Poker Face’ came first; Grace Howard and her steer ‘Point Break’ came third; and Danica Elliott and her steer ‘Pocket Rocket’ came fourth in a massive ECM class. This was against Frensham, Nowra and Macarthur Anglican.

In the light weight class, Hannah Wicks and her steer ‘Prime Time” placed fourth.

In the heavy weight class Lily Holmes and her steer “Poker Face” came first and then went on to win Champion Steer of the Show!

Hayley said, “Not only were we against a massive line up of other school steers, we were also against two private Angus studs. They had beaten us at Kangaroo Valley and Robertson Shows with their steers, but Saturday, we got up and beat them. You could not wipe the smile off all the kids faces, especially Lily’s”!

In paraders, Lily and Darcy achieved third place in each of their heats.

Hayley said, “It was lovely to have so many families come and watch and support their kids on the day. A huge shout out goes to Liam Gardner, who did not stop working behind the scenes all day.”
