Mock Trial Semi-finalists

The Chevalier College Mock Trial Team has, once again, proven to be a formidable force in the annual competition conducted by the Law Society of New South Wales.

On Friday 18 October the team hosted the Santa Sabina College team from Sydney for the quarter finals. It was a well-contested tussle between the two undefeated teams, but Chev prevailed on the day with a comprehensive winning score of 194 to 174. A very proud Mock Trial Team Coordinator Stephen Holmes said, “The scores accurately reflected the differences between the teams on Friday and we now enter the semi-finals.”

The competition has gone from over 160 schools in February to the final 4 teams going through. Chevalier College will face Redlands from Sydney next month, and like us, they are undefeated in the competition having just eliminated Moriah College in their quarter final. It promises to be an intense encounter. The other semi-final is being contested between Newcastle Grammar School and Loretto College, Kirribilli.

The semi-finals are to be completed by Wednesday 6 November, with the Grand Final at Sydney University’s Law School in late November.

Our team was Amanda Longhurst and Jacob Hodges (barristers), Angus Spencer (solicitor), Demi Rewais and Jessica (witnesses), and Sophie Griffin (magistrate’s clerk). They were invaluably assisted in preparing for the trial by Harry Duque and Erin Thomas.

Mr Holmes gave BIG THANKS to all for their support of the team so far this year, saying “They are a humble group who quietly get the job done each time and deserve a spotlight shone upon them after all they have achieved this year. We have only made it to the semi-finals twice, in 2013 and 2015, so to have made it through a third time is a big deal. We were fortunate enough in those two years to go on and win the competition outright.”

If Chev can win another title this year we will become the first school in the history of the competition (it’s been running since 1981) to win a third title.

We will be keenly watching this story and tuned in for the next round of the competition, wishing them all the very best!
