Chev Show Team’s ‘Royal Robbo Show’

The Chev Show Team has experienced a crushing disappointment with the cessation of the NSW Agriculture Show season due to Coronavirus (COVID19). The Robertson Show held over the weekend will therefore hold precious memories for the team as it was their last show together for 2020 with their much loved teacher and Chev Show Team coordinator Hayley Mahoney, who will be saying goodbye to Chev at the end of this term.

With the Royal Easter Show firmly in their sights, the students have worked tirelessly over the past 12 months preparing the animals for the 2020 show season, starting in our region at the Kangaroo Valley show in February. Robertson went ahead on Friday 13 March, just ahead of the COVID19 restrictions imposed on large public gatherings and the cancellation of this year’s Sydney Royal Easter Show.

Due to increased public concern, to protect the health of stakeholders and visitors, and in response to the Prime Minister and COAG’s direction that any organised mass gathering over 500 people should be cancelled, the 2020 Sydney Royal Easter Show is cancelled.

It is distressing and disappointing to cancel the Show for 2020. There are many people who will be very upset by this decision, and this is the first time the Sydney Royal Easter Show has been cancelled because of a public health emergency since the Spanish Flu pandemic in 1919.

The safety and well-being of our patrons and visitors is paramount and out of precaution, and in consultation with NSW Health, The Royal Agricultural Society of NSW has decided this is the best course of action.

Despite this upsetting news and some pretty ordinary weather at the show, The Chev Show Team pulled together, as they always do, dubbing it the ‘Royal Robbo Show’ and claiming some great results in the heifer competitions: First and Second Place – Schools Heifers;  First Place and Champion – Light Weight Steer; Venetia Bambridge came first in Under 13’s Paraders; and Grace Howard came first in 14-16 Year Paraders.

“Special mention must be made of the steer we call ‘Tennessee Whiskey’, said Hayley Mahoney, “that came from a two to three year drought-stricken property out near Tamworth. It has been the life-long dream of the owner to get a steer to the Royal and it is quite heart-breaking for us all that we came so close to making his dream come true. Maybe Chev Show Team will get another chance in the future – never say never.”

The media were out in force at the Robbo Show, keen for a good-news story after the challenging summer and farming conditions of the past several months, and the Chev Show Team, once again, did the college proud with their on-camera interviews and positive take on things.
