Ag Students Shine at the Royal

Two exciting events took place at the Royal Easter Show for our students of Agriculture…

Sophie Smethurst (Class of 2014) was awarded an RAS (Royal Agricultural Society) scholarship to support her studies.  We congratulate Sophie and wish her every success in the future.

Samantha Woodcock (Year 11) was presented with her second place prize for The Norman Lethbridge Award (Angus Cattle Society of Australia), receiving a cheque, a membership to the Angus Society of Australia and a scholarship to a workshop at Tocal Agricultural College in the Hunter Valley in September. This award also assures Sam a place at the College. At just 16 Sam’s achievement is particularly impressive as she competed with a field of over 100 students aged 16-25 years.

“My Primary Industry teacher, Megan Reeves, believed I was a good candidate for the award and arranged for me to enter. It was thrilling to attend my interview for it earlier this year with the Board of Angus Australia, but even more exciting was being placed 2nd in the Award and attending the Sydney Royal Easter Show to receive it,” said Sam.  “I’m currently studying Agriculture through Distance Education and Primary Industries. I have a passion for agriculture, the land, animals and cattle and want to pursue a career focusing on these in the near future.

The award is named in memory of the NSW State Committee past secretary and well-known stock and station agent Norman Lethbridge who served the NSW State Committee from 1983 until 1994. Entrants had to be between 16-25 years old, studying agriculture or a similar subject and reside within 200 kms of Sydney.

Sam believes this opportunity will open many pathways for her career aspirations in agriculture saying, “This is a wonderful experience and I personally encourage people like me who are passionate about cattle and agriculture.  It’s great to be supported and recognised for the hard yards you put in and to work towards making a change in agriculture.”
